The Women's Land Army - a lecture by Dr Ann Knief
Wednesday, 21 March, 8pm
Tickets: £3.75
In 1939 the British Government, mindful of food shortages that occurred in the First World War and realising that war with Germany was again a possibility, decided to begin preparing. A call was put out for women to help with all types of farm work.
This talk looks at the lives of those who became part of the Women's Land Army; the jobs they were expected to do and their own thoughts on their work and recreation.
Dr Ann Knief has a PhD in History from the University of Kent and wrote her thesis on the Bevin Boys. As a result she became interested in other wartime workers, including land girls and munitions workers. She gives talks on various historical subjects to clubs and societies throughout the south-east.
